being thankful day 6: my dogs

i'm a day behind, yesterday was sunday though, so i deserve a break! ;)

yesterday i was thankful for my dogs. i know i already post about them a lot, but really and truly they are terrific animals. and they are so different. lady is laid back and enjoys laying in the sunshine and getting her belly rubbed. while cajun has a neverending amount of energy and loves to wrestle and play! they love going to the beach and they both love to run free. lately we've been letting lady run free when we take her out. eventually cajun will get there, but right now he's just not a good enough listener. they both love bed time and are great cuddlers. cajun likes to sleep curled up by my pillow with his face by mine. so sweet! :) so yesterday i was greatful for a day of cuddling and relaxing with my dogs and husband :) and for how incredibly lucky i am to have them all. i'm glad lady and cajun chose us and are so happy in our home!

and no post is finished without a few cute pictures of them! :)

thankful day 5: saturday mornings

i think my favorite part of the week is early morning on saturdays. i make coffee and a real breakfast. the one time a week i cook eggs and usually turkey sausage. we take the dogs for a walk and then we usually relax on the couch with tv that we've recorded that week. today i'm thankful for that down time with my husband.

not so different than saturday mornings growing up i don't think. same kind of relaxing feeling of not having anything that has to get done right then. i love that feeling.

fall is really here now. it has been cold the past few days. cold enough to wear sweatshirts and jackets to let the dogs out early in the morning. it's also getting darker and darker for the dogs last walk at night. that is no fun, i hate trying to find their poop in the dark! but, they both have an aversion to going to the bathroom near any sort of light. so for the next few months my flashlight and i will be good friends!

family

Family is such an important thing to me. I wouldn't be where I am today without them. I talk to my Mom, sister and Grandmother daily. I talk to my Grandfather and Uncle some, but to be honest I'm not a big phone person and neither are they. But, I do catch up with them occassionally :)

We've had quite a few health scares with my family in the last few years. My Grandfather had a massive heart attack in May 2009. He actually died but luckily when he had his heart attack he was surrounded by friends who were in the Coast Guard and CPR trained and literally within spitting distance of the Fire Department. Otherwise he wouldn't be here today.

Before that in 2007 we had crazy crazy times with my Grandmother. She went through more testing, poking and prodding than anyone I know. They diagnosed her with everything from leukemia to stomach cancer. But, after going in for exploratory surgery for what they thought was lung cancer they finally figured out what was wrong. Her Dr. (who I can't remember his name right now, he is an amazing surgeon in the Hampton Roads, VA area) went in and took samples from nodules in her lung. He felt something wasn't right and after came out to talk to us. Interestingly enough the week before he and some colleagues had been doing a discussion on Wegener's Granulomotisis which you can read about here. It only took him about 5 minutes of talking to us and suddenly (you could literally see the lightbulb go off in his head) he just turned around and left. My Gran spent the rest of the day in recovery and then 4 days in ICU and then a few days in a regular room. I think all in all she was there for about 2 weeks. The diagnosis: Wegener's. It's been such a large part of her life since then. Daily medications some of which are the drugs given to prepare people for organ transplant. Nasty drugs that take a lot out of a person. Luckily for us she's still here and I'm so lucky I get to have her in my life. But, she has to remember to take care of herself and to take it easy. She doesn't produce red blood cells like the rest of us and tends to be more tired. And she's NOT good at resting. She prefers to go go go.

Recently my Uncle has been going through some health issues as well that he doesn't want to discuss or have anyone know about. But, the news has been taking a lot out of both my Grandparents. They could use some extra love and prayers.

I luckily get to give them some of both very soon as Matt and I will be travelling to VA for Labor Day (maybe sooner if Hurricane Irene decides to hit the Myrtle Beach area this weekend...) and I'm so excited to give all of my family a hug and just spend time with them. Only 10 working days until we pack up the cars and the dogs and we head North! I think a car ride with those two is going to be quite interesting. We took a longer than normal ride (about 2 hours in the car) this weekend and while Lady slept, Cajun cried and cried and wanted to be held. Cajun does NOT like the car, he prefers getting himself places with his own four paws. So the 6 hours each way are going to be very interesting. I think I will pack some chocolate! ;)

the weekend!

We made it back to the dog park this weekend! :) I think the high ended up only being like 95. So it was kind of comfortable, haha. The dogs spent a lot of time in the pond. And....were ready to go home after about 30 minutes.
This is what two tired puppies look like post dog park. Lady could barely keep her eyes open on the drive home!
Other than that things have been pretty low key around here. I've been itching to really clean the house so I did that while Matt caught up on some play station Saturday morning. We watched some movies Saturday night. Dorian Gray was ok, kind of weird and slow moving. But, then we watched an unexpectedly good movie called Breaking and Entering with Jude Law. I don't think it did well because Matt bought it for 70 cents (yes 70 cents, we are both bargain hunters ;)) at Blockbuster. I would definitely recommend it. Then I forced Matt to watch a bad SciFi* movie...Crocosaurus vs. Mega Shark. I know I know it was as ridiculous as it sounds. But, I still watched it.

*Yes I know it's SyFy or something now. But, I refuse to spell it that way.

I didn't get as much cooking in this weekend as last. I wasn't feeling 100% so that meant not wanting to spend a lot of time in the kitchen or smelling food. I did however get some great deals at Piggly Wiggly and Bi-Lo. If you live near either one you should check out their sales ads. Piggly Wiggly is having some great buy one get one free deals in their produce and meat sections. Is there any good way to get pre-packaged salads to last longer? That is one of the things that is buy one get one. And it's a great deal because they're 1.99 so you get each bag of salad for $1! But, I'm worried we won't be able to eat more than 2 before the week and the sale are over :( I think I need to look into freezing salad.......

Sunday, I love Sundays, but I dislike how fast they seem to go. I had a craving for Sonic today that had to be met. So Matt went and got me a Watermelon slushie. Definitely satisfied my craving and made me one happy girl!

And now I'm going to try and make myself cook some for the week. I have a roast and a casserole I want to make. And I really need to vacuum still. I think I could vacuum twice a day and with the dogs you would never be able to tell. At least for like 5 minutes after my house looks clean....And then I'm going to read some. I just got a new book by Madeline L'Engle The Joys of Love. I love her writing so I'm hoping this book will be just as great as her others!

the move

i can't believe we've been living in south carolina for two months now! we moved memorial day weekend to pawleys island, sc from suffolk, va. we left behind so many friends and family but we're excited for life down south. the hardest thing for me to adjust to is not being able to call my mom, sister or grandparents to meet for lunch, shopping, coffee, etc. it's been hard but thank goodness for cell phones and the internet! :)

i started working for the university of south carolina in georgetown, sc. i'm a data specialist working with water quality data that is collected by the 28 national estuarine research reserve's across the united states. it's been an awesome career change. and i really like the area.

after matt and i moved here we adopted two dogs! lady and cajun. they're both from the local shelter and they provide me with tons of stories every day. i could probably dedicate this blog to only talking about the crazy things they do and keep you entertained. i'll try not to though :)

in addition to working i love cooking, reading, wine, shopping and the beach! i haven't really gotten in to a groove with cooking since we moved but i'm hoping to get better about it. i feel like we're finally starting to move from the 'transition' stage to having a more stable schedule. after reading more blogs i've become intrigued by menu planning. i need to get on this. i definitely think it will help with not only eating better but saving money at the store which i love doing too!

i'm hoping to tackle a few diy home projects too. i've never really been very crafty but i'm excited to try! i have a cute sofa table i want to refinish and a few crafts from other blogs i want to try out for the house :)
