Sunday Social! Week 8

Linking up this week with Neely and Ashely for Sunday Social!

Sunday Social

1. What is your dream job?

Well if you had asked me 10 years ago I would have said working in sea turtle research or for a sea turtle/marine mammal stranding group. I wanted to work outside on the water forever.

Well that world and I didn't really get along. It was not a good fit.

I love my current job and wouldn't leave it for anything.

HOWEVER I think it would be fun to either own a vineyard or run a winery for a vineyard. Maybe when I retire ;) I love wine and I love talking to people. Specifically being in a job where it would be required that you chat. I'm nosey.

I could also be a professional Target shopper as well ;)

2. If you had just won the lottery and didn't need to work for money, what would you do with your time?

Volunteer at a winery, volunteer at the humane society,  and travel. Oh and take a lot of cooking lessons. I would like to combine the traveling and cooking :)

3. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Marine biologist. Specifically when I was little I wanted to be a dolphin trainer, at Sea World. I'm very lucky to have partially lived that dream by working for a marine mammal rescue group for a year! I've been able to do so many things I only dreamed or read about as kid. Tagging turtles, dolphins and seals. Watching a sea turtle nest. Helping sea turtle nestlings out of a nest and releasing them, rescuing dolphins that were stranded and releasing them. Sometimes I forget how lucky I am. Then I look back at all the pictures I have from the past 10 years and I realize I really am lucky. Not many kids get to realize their childhood dreams :)

4. What piece career advice would you give to someone just starting out in your field?

Internships, internships, internships. Take the entry level job, volunteer for any extra field work you can. Pay attention in stats class. Don't burn any bridges. The marine science field is mall in a lot of ways.

And also be present in your job. Entry level jobs in most fields suck. In marine science they suck in different ways. You may get stuck acid washing sampling bottles for hours on end, weeks at a time. You will probably have to move buckets of water at some point. You will sweat. You will probably get a sunburn or two. You will have to do the jobs that you think everyone else is too good to do. The truth: they were where you are right now, whether it be 5, 10, 15 or 20 years before. Enjoy your time in the field and doing grunt work. One day you're going to be stuck at your desk answering emails and groaning when the phone rings. Then you'll wish you could go back outside and carry buckets of water in the sunshine enjoying a beautiful view for a few hours :) (Sidenote: usually dreams of carrying buckets of water and grunt work are short lived, but the idea of not being responsible for anything is kind of nice!)

5. What are your biggest pet peeves in life, blogging, or at work?

People who bring smelly lunches, onions being in everything, people who mistreat their animals and people who think they are better than everyone else.

Mainly I don't understand why it is hard for some people to be genuinely nice. I would like to think that even when I don't necessarily get along with someone I can be nice to them. Not in order to be fake or to save face. But, because I know I'm not going to always get along with everyone or love everyone. But, I also don't want to go through life being angry or bitter. I think a lot of people tend to think I am fake nice from time to time because I can be angry and then I deal with it and then I'm done. I'm not angry anymore. I don't really hold grudges, I don't let things fester and stew. I'm not always going to understand why people do things and why they make the decisions they make. And I don't necessarily need to. It's their life and I'm not living it.

Wow that was random. From smelly lunches to holding grudges. That's the way my brain works. I am random.

6. What are your biggest fears?

Spiders, flying and losing the people I love.

I feel these three are pretty common. Spiders are creepy and some can kill you. I have a recurring nightmare of one that crawls from my pillow on to my face and I'm frozen and I can't do anything about it. All I can is watch. It's awful.

I used to fly all the time. Then all of a sudden I was afraid. The last time I flew I was ok. But, I definitely was not happy. I know I could probably do it again with drugs, but I'm just scared. For now I will drive everywhere. Or take the train. I think the train is underrated.

And losing the people I love. I mean I know death is inevitable. And I know being a Christian I will see them again some day, in whatever form that may be. But, honestly I deal with the fear of them leaving earlier than I want them to. It's a selfish fear, but I love them and I want them here. Something I struggle with a lot.

I also have a slight fear of bridges. Like sometimes I fear that I'm just going to randomly go over the side. I mean I do realize I have control of the car but sometimes I'll think well what if I just swerved and went over on accident. I'm weird I know. This is especially awful on really high bridges. I prefer to drive (control freak anyone?) and I tight knuckle grip the steering wheel the whole time. I'm not sure I breathe either.

I also hate elevators but it's not like flying. I can still get in an elevator. I haven't been on a plane since 2002. And unlike planes I know where this one stems from. When I was 6 I wanted to take the elevator in Sears for fun. Well guess what the elevator got stuck. I remember feeling the walls closing in on me and the adults in the elevator laughing at me. Makes me feel panicky thinking about it, haha. I now prefer elevators with glass walls. Being able to see the outside makes me feel like I can breathe :)

I'm on the fence between the sea turtle research and the winery. I think I'll take both!
